5Logitech answers why!
By Mr. Queensway, the 'right' Barrister
This is my first review and it happens to be the first for this great trackball. The review is long but you can go directly to the item (s) that suit you: Old Members, new buttons, HTPC, new users, and Wireless Gaming. I hope it's useful.
- Introduction -
This line of trackball from Logitech is best known for its unique design, using the thumb for movement and the index / middle finger to click. The advantage of this design 'thumb-ball' is that the former mouse users will not have to adapt to a different position (thumb and index finger to click / middle finger for moving, such as the Kensington trackball).
- History -
After releasing the popular TrackMan Wheel Optical (wired), Logitech has gone ahead and brought us the wireless version (Wireless TrackMan Wheel, still available on Amazon).
The wireless version suffers huge size of the receiver, which makes it impractical for laptop / space-constrained computer configurations.
After years of protests on the receiver design (see the forum Logitech) Logitech trackball finally decided to upgrade and equip it with unifying the receiver. The receiver can connect up to 6 devices at the same time and in miniature size means that you can leave the USB port of a laptop all the time. Other new features include 2 programmable buttons and a battery indicator on the left of the 'left-click' button.
- Old User -
I owned the Trackman Optical wired and I immediately felt at home with the M570. There is no significant difference in terms of button layout and I can not say the two at the press. The ball has been changed to blue, perhaps in an attempt to distinguish from the old M570 Wireless Trackman Wheel.
There is a subtle difference between the balls on the M570 and wired Trackman. The red ball on my wired Trackman was smooth as silk and it feels light as you move.
On the other hand, the blue ball on the M570 seems to have a little 'more resistance (after cleaning), which does not disturb me at all. The blue ball also seems quieter in use.
I do not think that the old users will be upset by this minor change, and this extra strength can also be due to the fact that my unit is brand new. I will update my review if this changes the feel.
- New buttons -
I switched to the M570 especially for the 2 new buttons. Now I can turn on / turn off my secondary monitor and move windows between monitors with a single click (requires software UltraMon). The new buttons are sticking distinctive and form a nice curve that fits the index finger. I can rest my index finger comfortably on these keys and identify the individual button with ease. Both buttons have a definite 'click' feel to it when pressed.
You must download the latest SetPoint and click 'Check for Updates' button to download a 3 MB package update before you can customize the buttons.
I suppose that the CD-ROM contains a newer version than what you can download from the Web, then stick to it for the
- HTPC -
Spite of its size, the M570 is actually quite light. If you care about the volume of sound clicks, you can be relieved to know that the button 'Back' is almost silent.
You can associate the Back button to 'Left Click' with the SetPoint software and will be a fine, quiet, ergonomic pointing HTPC. Note: Middle and Forward buttons to make loud noise and click the buttons right / left click to make noise acceptable.

If you have not used one inch ball before, you should try! I can not praise enough this design when I moved to Trackman. At the beginning I had some problems with his speed, but after experimenting with the speed / acceleration settings for about 5 minutes I was able to perform daily activities with greater precision and more speed.
The biggest advantage of using a thumb-ball instead of a mouse is that I can move the cursor to another monitor (about 2000 pixels away) with a finger. With the mouse I had to lift the mouse several times, using a large number of muscles in the process.
The great advantage of an inch above the ball mouse is the comfort, ease obtained by moving the cursor. In case of thumb-balls, only the thumb should be moved and the other fingers remain stationery. The smoothness of the sphere ensures that your thumb will not be over-exercised.
In the case of a mouse, however, the fingers need to 'understand' and 'move' the mouse and the wrist has to 'turn', causing prolonged stress of all parts of the hand.
Trackman/M570 The design also provides a place of rest for all the fingers: the thumb can rest on the ball (note: the inertia ball is enough to hold the thumb so that it does not fall to the bottom), the index ring fingers rest the surface, while the little finger can rest on the small 'gap' specially prepared for this.
The thumb-ball dispenses with mouse pad and does not require additional space for movement.
You can place your stationery or a glass of water next to it, without fear of being overthrown. Thumb-ball works miracles on limited space offices.
I used a computer for over 10 years and design Trackman gave me the biggest improvement in terms of comfort (the second is the invention of the keyboard 'chiclet'). I had been supporting its use since I got hold of the wired Trackman and I hope that you will feel the improvement
- Wireless -
It makes sense to switch from wired to wireless?
In my case there is no pressing need to do it, but I appreciate the space saved by removing the cable. I had to lengthen the cable at its best when I was using the old Trackman and a lot of things are in his way. Also contrary to popular view I DO Trackman/M570 move around. This is because I sit on a swivel chair and my Trackman corner changes from time to time. The cable Trackman caused some problems when setting and design of this M570 wireless problem is completely gone.
Must wait for the Bluetooth?
If you have a device that does not support the Unifying receiver (phone / laptop that can not save a USB port), then you have no choice but to wait. Except in this case I do not think that a version of Bluetooth is required. I have the Bluetooth keyboard and mouse from Apple and have nightmares! The connection seems to break at the most inappropriate and I had to guess whether it was the battery or Bluetooth. If I had not reconnect automatically launch the console configuration with any Bluetooth devices that are still working. Try opening the console when the mouse does not work (hint: enable mouse buttons) and you will see my point.
For each space you save with Bluetooth, you pay a lot of potential problems.
- Gaming -
Game with any type of trackball is an acquired taste, some say trackball are inaccurate, while others argue that improved after switching to trackball. I have no problem with RTS and FPS games with my old Trackman and I suppose the same is true with the M570, which shares the same design.
The wheel adds an extra DISTINCT each time it is rolled up, which I think is essential for any serious FPS players. There are 3 programmable buttons (two on the index finger and a medium / road). I think the 5-button, M570 is currently the best game you can buy-inch balls.

5This is the best substitute for Microsoft Trackball Optical
From Reseil
After being one of the many people of the old school who lamented the loss of the Microsoft trackball, I can honestly say that this is a replacement top.
The day I had to bury my Microsoft Optical has been a sad day when he died, but I had many years of use out of it. Up to now, has been the best so far I have used trackballs (and I used them all), but today I received 2 of the new M570 and replaced my wired TrackMan Wheel.
They are slightly smaller than the TrackMan Wheel, but they look much better ergonomics.
Unlike the five-button Microsoft where he was the fifth button on the right place and it was a little 'uncomfortable because of the size of the device, the M570 is just above the back button in a perfect location. Now I am using wireless (Wireless TrackMan I avoided because of the long-receiver), are even happier at home and office.
Other reviews for this product are correct, but add a few comments:
Mention was made of the real sphere of this device is a bit 'stronger than the current version of Logitech, but a quick polish with a cotton cloth is the correction. In combination with the new SetPoint software, this is my new favorite input device.
Range is good enough for the receiver, I connected to a latency-free USB port on the back a good 3 feet away.
The other interesting thing is that the battery has a storage point for the receiver like the latest models of notebook mice. Car receiver, and contained 500 + days of life with one battery (as the instrument
